Europe’s highest seaside cliff, the hollow limestone Cap Canaille (399m) towers above the southestern side of the Baie de Cassis (Bay of Cassis). From the top, captivating views unfold across the town and Mont Puget (564m), the highest point in the Massif de Calanques.

Offering equally jaw-dropping panoramas, the Route des Crêtes (D141; closed in high winds) snakes 16km along the cliff top from Cassis to La Ciotat.

The tourist office has information on rock climbing, deep-sea diving, sea kayaking and other activities, including a one-hour walking trail to Calanque de Port-Pin (take water and a map).

Twelve estates producing the Cassis appellation cover 210 hectares of the surrounding hillsides; the tourist office has a list of estates you can visit to taste and buy (most require advance reservation), as well as suggested itineraries. The office also offers guided tours throughout the village, stopping to taste local treats (per person €7, 90 minutes), and two-hour tours of the nearby calanques on electric bikes (per person €25). Tours are more frequent in high season; check with the office or online to book.

For most of the year, this company runs boat excursions from quai St-Pierre to the crenellated coast of the Parc National des Calanques. A 45-minute trip to three calanques (Port-Miou, Port-Pin and En-Vau) costs €16/9.50 per adult/child; a 65-minute trip covering these plus Oule and Devenson is €20/14. Buy tickets at the port-side kiosk.
